Stressed About Post Graduation? Here Are Some Tips and Resources!

Are you stressed about plans after you graduate? You are not alone!

Maybe you came into college knowing exactly what you wanted to do after college, but now that you started to learn more about that career path, it isn’t what you expected. Maybe you explored classes but after the pressure of declaring a major, you majored in something you are not entirely interested in. Or maybe you are still set on a certain career path but applying to graduate school or jobs is daunting. Whatever your reason for being stressed about plans after you graduate, you are not alone.

Nobody prepares you for what’s to come after college, society expects us to land a job or go to graduate school. And while I can say that you have your entire life to figure it out, I recognize that some of you may not have the privilege. Post graduation, the bills don’t stop for insurance, student loans, rent, etc. so there is a pressure to start to earn income.

Acknowledging that, here are some tips to help you manage the emotions of plans after graduation.

  1. Be present. I know this one is cliche and you have probably heard it a bunch of times but if you are really present, you’ll notice a change in your inner thoughts. Try meditating by using a YouTube video, an app like Calm or Headspace or just sitting comfortably by yourself listening and being conscious of every breath you take, in through your nose and out through your mouth.

  2. Surround yourself with supportive people. They can empower you and help you through difficult times as well as celebrate your successes.

  3. Explore your interests, try a new hobby. If you are like me, I haven’t had a lot of time to explore what I am interested in outside of school. Hobbies are a great way to relieve stress, and help make you feel happy.

  4. Talk to a therapist. Getting professional help like talking to a therapist can help you process your feelings and emotions as well as provide you with tools on how to approach life’s challenges.

  5. Acknowledge that your feelings are valid. The stress you are feeling about what happens after you graduate is real. Our lives are not linear, just because your peers or others may know exactly what they want to do after they graduate doesn’t mean that you should also know. Take time to acknowledge that what you are going through is real and valid.
